UOB Art in Ink Awards
Inaugurated in 2017, the annual art competition is held in Hong Kong with an aim to uncover local artistic talents and to contribute to greater awareness and appreciation of ink art. It is part of the UOB Art Academy, a platform to make art more accessible to the community, to nurture artistic talents and to rejuvenate cultural heritage through carefully-curated programmes.
Art has the power to shift perceptions and create positive change. In this edition, we encourage artists to reflect on the relationship between art and sustainability and to forge a sustainable future through ink art.
This competition is open to all established and aspiring artists from now till 12 September 2021.
The Awards is open to all Hong Kong residents aged 9 or above. Participation is free of charge.
Participant should apply to one of the following categories based on age*:
(aged 18 and above)
(aged 13 to 17)
(aged 9 to 12)
* For the determination of the eligibility to enter into a particular category, the age of the participant will be determined by the date of submission.
** The parent or legal guardian of a participant who is below 18 years of age must consent to his/her participation in the Awards in the entry form and agree to the Rules and Regulations. An entry could be rejected by UOB Hong Kong at its absolute discretion when UOB Hong Kong considers that the entry does not conform to the guidelines set out in the Awards.
All artworks should be created using traditional Chinese ink as its core medium. Accepted art mediums include ink on paper, ink on canvas and ink on silk. The following two genres are welcome:
Entries must be made online from 5 May 2021 to 12 September 2021 (both dates inclusive) via www.UOBArtAcademy.com.hk. No late or incomplete entries will be accepted after 12 September 2021.
Artwork submissions should be in a digital or photographic format, with a file size of not less than 3MB but not exceeding 8MB in JPEG format. The participant must provide a clear and well-lit image of the artwork. The artwork should be photographed against a white background with the camera facing the artwork at a 90-degree angle.
Actual artwork dimensions should not exceed 250cm x 250cm where applicable. Minimum dimensions for artwork should be 50cm x 50cm. The above-mentioned dimensions apply to composite entries, framed and mounted artworks.
All artworks submitted should be originally created by the participant within 2 years of the submission date and does not infringe any copyright owned by any third party.
No title, identification or watermark of the maker shall be visible anywhere on the face of an image.
Shortlisted participants will be notified in September 2021 and will be responsible for covering the costs of artwork packaging, delivery and insurance to a designated location for final judging.
If an artwork is drawn based on a photo, the photo must be taken by the participant or the participant has a written permission from the photographer in order to use the photos.
All participants should be prepared to be able to send a high-resolution print-quality file should their submission be selected as a winning entry. The image resolution should be 300dpi.
Winning artworks selected for the exhibition will follow standard framing and mounting procedure for Chinese ink art unless any special framing and/or mounting requirement is specified. All artworks, stretchers and frames must be suitable for small screws and fixings for hanging purposes.
An independent panel of judges comprising renowned artists, art academics, art critics and other art professionals will help with the judging of entries. The judging panel is looking for artists with outstanding technique, concept, creativity, composition and understanding of Chinese ink.

UOB Art in Ink Awards offers generous prizes worth more than HK$330,000 including cash prizes and an overseas artist residency, etc.
The following prizes will be awarded to winners of each genre:
A winning artwork from the open category will be selected as the "UOB Ink Art of the Year". The winning artist will receive a unique opportunity to attend an overseas artist residency programme where the departure date is subject to the current travel restrictions. This winner will be sponsored to complete the specific artist residency programme and undertake to return to Hong Kong upon completion. He/She will have to complete a report and a presentation for UOB Hong Kong.
The artist residency programme is not transferable, cannot be altered, returned or deemed for cash under any circumstances. No alternate compensation/benefit will be given to this winner if he/she is unable to take this scholarship for any reason. UOB Hong Kong accepts no liability for and makes no representations of warranties regarding the quality of the above-mentioned course. Winner may be required to conduct an admission interview via video conference or phone call with the institution that will provide the artist residency programme. Admission result will be based on the performance during the interview.
To recognise and nurture young talents, one award winner from the student categories will be selected as the winner of “Most Promising Artist of the Year”. This winner will be sponsored to complete a series of bespoke ink art workshops in Hong Kong.
To recognise the top three schools or educational institutions with the highest number of submissions in the Awards. Each winning school or educational institution will be rewarded with a certificate and a cash voucher for art supplies worth HK$1,000.
Information about the school or educational institution has to be provided by the participant during online registration. The school or educational institution may need to provide information to the participant in advance. It includes the name of the school or educational institution, the name of the contact person, phone number and email address.
All winners will be notified on the venue, date and time of an award presentation ceremony in November 2021.
Participants must comply with the relevant copyright legislation. Entries in violation of copyright or related offences will be disqualified. The participant should bear his/her own legal liability. Any legal dispute is not related to UOB Hong Kong. Participants agree that UOB Hong Kong reserves the right including but not limited to reproduce, use, modify, exhibit, publish and distribute the entries through any media for the purpose of marketing and promotion without any payment in respect of such use and prior notice to the participants.
Each participant can submit a maximum of one entry for each of the mentioned genres. Submission of more than one entry for each of the genres would lead to disqualification.
Participants should not submit artworks that have been offered for sale, published, entered or awarded any prizes in previous contest/competition(s) or exhibited publicly in any form including online exhibitions.
The artwork must not promote illegal behaviour; support racial, religious, sexual or other invidious prejudice; advocate sexual or violent exploitation; violate rights established by law or agreements; invade the privacy of any person; or be otherwise disqualified by UOB in its sole and conclusive determination.
All winners agree to unconditionally transfer the ownership and copyright of their artworks to UOB Hong Kong. UOB Hong Kong has the right to use the images of any winning artworks for marketing and advertising purposes.
All winning artworks will be exhibited at the UOB Art in Ink Awards Exhibition which will be held at selected UOB offices in Hong Kong and any other locations as determined by UOB Hong Kong. UOB Hong Kong has the absolute discretion to decide the venues and the dates.
All entries will be evaluated by the panel of judges appointed at the discretion of UOB. The decision of the judges is final. No correspondence will be entered into this subject before, during, and/or after the Awards.
All winners will be required to co-operate with UOB Hong Kong for the promotions related to the Awards and act as mentors for art programmes as determined by UOB Hong Kong from time to time.
UOB Hong Kong reserves the right not to award any of the stipulated prizes should entries fail, in the judges’ opinion, to meet the required standards.
UOB Hong Kong may, at its sole and absolute discretion, make exceptions to allow for artworks by full-time art students which have been exhibited at their respective school graduation shows but which have not been offered for sale, published, entered in previous competition or exhibited in any other form.
All non-winning artworks can be collected from a designated location on 1 November 2021 onwards, address and details will be announced in due course. Any artwork that is not collected on or before 31 December 2021 will become the property of UOB. UOB will exercise full discretion to the management, distribution and use of the uncollected artworks and will not be liable for any damages to uncollected artworks.
UOB Hong Kong reserves the right to change the guidelines and Rules and Regulations at any time without prior notice and the Awards may be withdrawn or terminated by UOB Hong Kong at its discretion without prior notice. UOB Hong Kong accepts no liability for any such change, withdrawal and termination.
An entry could be rejected by UOB Hong Kong at its absolute discretion when UOB Hong Kong considers that the entry does not conform to the guidelines set out in this website.
The decision of UOB Hong Kong on all matters not provided for by the above Rules and Regulations shall be final and conclusive. Any dispute regarding the above Rules and Regulations shall be resolved based on the English version.
